When I was in labor with our first born, we were chilling out at the birth center because I was scared to have an accidental unassisted birth at home or in the car. We were watching Father of the Bride Part II (you know, the one where mom and daughter are having babies together?) and my husband had never seen it. He was all into the movie, literally on the edge of his seat, while I was just having these super intense contractions. He would randomly pat me on the leg and tell me how great I was doing, but really, he was focused on the movie. All of a sudden, I had the overwhelming urge to throw up. I have a severe fear of throwing up, so I kind of freaked out. I started yelling, “Honey! I’m gonna throw up! Lisa (my midwife), I’m gonna throw up!” And throw up I did…all into my husband’s loving hands. He snapped out of his movie stupor and cupped his hands together to catch my vomit. Seconds later, my midwife produced a bowl where I proceeded to upchuck my breakfast. After that, we both realized that labor was getting pretty intense and that we should turn the movie off so I could concentrate, or rather, so my husband could concentrate on me.
A few hours later, my husband was kneeling by the tub, gently talking me through contractions and praying over me. Between contractions, I hear him say, “Man, my knees hurt kneeling on the floor.” I just kind of gave him “the look” and told him how painful that must be for him.
Now, before you go judging my husband, know that he is NOT an insensitive jerk. In fact, he’s probably one of the best husbands I have ever heard of. Both of our personalities are filled with sarcastic humor and my labors were full of jokes and laughter.
What funny or unexpected things did your partner do and/or say to you, or your birth team, while you were in labor?
